What is chess?

Chess is a game for two players. It's played on a board with 64 squares — light and dark, like a checkerboard.

Each player gets 16 pieces — you'll see them in the next lesson. One person plays with the light pieces, the other plays with the dark pieces. White always goes first.

You take turns. On your turn, you move one piece.
